Protests have erupted in the United States demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student who led the pro-Palestinian movement.
Hundreds of people protested in New York's Times Square on Saturday. The protesters accused the Trump administration of stifling free speech. "The present government is anti-democratic.
A US court on Friday (April 11) approved the expulsion of Mahmoud Khalil from the United States. As a result, the Trump administration will be able to start the process of expelling green card holder Khalil. This caused widespread outrage in the country.
The Trump administration has not brought any criminal charges against Khalil. Khalil wrote in a letter from prison that he was arrested for speaking out for the rights of Palestinians.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Khalil's rhetoric and program could threaten U.S. foreign policy. He was deported under the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
