Trump and Putin set for 'very critical' Ukraine call

In a potentially pivotal move to end the conflict in Ukraine, more than three years after Moscow's invasion, US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will speak over the phone Tuesday.

Although both parties have shown optimism regarding recent Washington-Moscow negotiations, they have also acknowledged that the most difficult issues on a 30-day truce could only be resolved by a high-level call.

The ceasefire has been accepted by Ukraine, but Kyiv and European capitals are dubious that Putin is stalling and question whether Trump is prepared to use force against a leader with whom he appears determined to mend fences.

"We're going to have a very important call," Trump said reporters Monday. "We're getting down to a very critical stage."

On his Truth Social network, Trump went on to say that "many elements of a final agreement have been agreed to, but much remains."

"I look very much forward to the call with President Putin," he stated.
Last week, Putin stated that while he supported the notion of a ceasefire, he wanted to talk to Trump about his "serious questions" about how it would be carried out.

US officials have stated that Ukraine would probably have to give up territory in any agreement because Moscow controls large areas of southern and eastern Ukraine.
