The rulers waged wars to bolster their authority and deflect public focus from pressing problems. Allegations have been made throughout history against a number of rulers who used violence to maintain their positions of authority. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, has been charged with evading corruption charges at the International Criminal Court by utilizing the Gaza war as a pretext.
Netanyahu has been accused by members of Israel's parliament, the Knesset, of using the ongoing war in Gaza as a cover for corruption cases.
"Netanyahu is making our future and the future of our children conditional on his case," Democratic Knesset member Na'ama Lazimi told the Times of Israel.
