A French naval fleet led by the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle is heading towards the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the French military said. The move is part of preparations for a future international mission with the UK to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, the French defence ministry said in a statement on Wednesday (May 6).
The aircraft carrier fleet has passed the Suez Canal and is now heading towards the southern part of the Red Sea.
According to the ministry, the fleet was deployed to the eastern Mediterranean shortly after the US and Israel launched air strikes on Iran. It is capable of staying at sea for four to five months at a time.
France and the UK have taken the initiative to lead an international mission to secure commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, if the situation improves.
