Two meetings between Trump and Netanyahu in 24 hours |
US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The world's attention was on their discussions in the White House - maybe this time the destruction in Gaza will stop, the bloodshed will stop for a while. Many thought that at least once a ceasefire would be announced. But that hope was shattered. Despite two rounds of meetings in 24 hours, there was no message of peace. The meeting, which had raised little hope around the world, was finally stopped under the cover of diplomatic courtesy, without any effective results.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a second meeting with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday. The meeting was expected to be followed by important announcements on the ceasefire in Gaza and hostage release talks. Netanyahu quietly left the White House on Tuesday evening without making a public announcement, after more than an hour of meetings at the White House.
"The situation in Gaza is a tragedy," Trump said before the meeting. We want a solution and I believe the other side wants it too. '
The two leaders had a long discussion during a dinner at the White House on Monday. This is Netanyahu's third visit to Washington since Trump began his second term as president.
Al-Jazeera said details of the talks were scarce. The meeting was kept strictly confidential.
Trump's special envoy for the Middle East, Steven Wittkopf, said a cease-fire deal was close. "" "We hope to have a 60-day ceasefire agreement by the end of this week." This could lead to the return of 10 surviving prisoners and the bodies of nine dead Palestinians. On the other hand, Qatar has said that it will take more time for Israel to reach a ceasefire with Hamas.
"On Tuesday, Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said:" "I don't think I can give a specific time frame at the moment. But I think we need more time. Negotiations will continue for a long time. '
The fifth round of talks between Israel and Hamas in Qatar ended without significant progress, Saudi news agency Asharq News reported. "A Palestinian official told the media that the talks were" "at a standstill. The Israeli delegation was limited to listening instead of discussing," "he alleged." The Israeli delegation has no real decision-making power," the official added. Netanyahu's decision to reach any possible agreement is final. '
In the meantime, Netanyahu has instructed the army to plan the transfer of all Palestinians in Gaza to a camp in the south. "Defence Minister Yisrael Katz told reporters on Monday that he wanted to establish a" "humanitarian city" "on the ruins of Rafah." Although the city is for a total population of 2.1 million, initially 600,000 Palestinians will be able to live there. He added that the aim of bringing people into the city after security checks was to make sure they were not Hamas operatives and would not be allowed to leave. If conditions are favorable, construction will begin during the 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Israeli forces continued to attack during the talks. On Tuesday night, 20 people were killed in Israeli air strikes on Khan Younis and a refugee camp in the north of Gaza. They have 6 children. At least 95 Palestinians were reported killed in the 24 hours to Wednesday.
At least 57,575 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks since the war began on October 7, 2023. Another 1,36,879 people were injured.
