The European Commission has threatened to retaliate if Trump's 30% tariff goes into effect.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, issued the threat on Saturday.

He said that if the United States imposes a 30 percent tariff on European goods from August 1, the EU is ready to take the necessary steps to protect its interests.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday announced a 30 percent tariff on imports from Mexico and the European Union (EU) after weeks of negotiations failed to reach a comprehensive trade deal. In a post on social media, the US president said the tariffs would take effect on August 1.

Earlier this week, Trump announced new tariffs on a number of countries, including Japan, South Korea, Canada and Brazil.
