Peru's president faces pressure to double his salary |
Peru's President Dina Boluarte has issued a decree to increase her own salary. He doubled his salary by issuing a decree.
This was reported by the BBC on Thursday, July 3.
Peru's President Dina Boluarte has doubled her salary despite having the lowest popularity in the country's history. His decision was widely criticised on social media. From now on, the president will receive a salary of 35,500 soles (0,000) per month, which is twice as much as before.
Peru's Finance Minister Raul Perez Reyes said the decision was in line with other heads of state in the region.
However, this argument did not satisfy the common people of Peru. Boluarte's support is just 2 percent, the lowest in Peru's history. The minimum monthly wage in the country is 1,25 soles (just 88). The president's new salary is 35 times higher.
Boluarte's pay rise, meanwhile, has been described by many as inhumane and an expression of deafness to human suffering. Some wrote - it is a crime to increase one's salary where people can't eat.
Many also shared videos of stones and eggs being thrown at the president's car in the city of Arequipa, saying the people's anger is clear, but he is adamant.
However, Dina Boluarte was not elected president of Peru. Boluarte took over as vice-president in December 2022, when President Pedro Castillo was impeached.
However, there have been several controversies during his tenure. Hiding expensive gifts, leaving no acting president in the country during nose surgery, and going abroad have also caused controversy. His popularity is also steadily declining due to his alleged inability to do anything against the increase in crime in the country. He, however, denied the allegation.
The South American country's government says Boluarte's previous salary was the second lowest among 12 South American countries. Only the president of Bolivia is paid less.
