| Earthquake in Myanmar: Search for survivors continues after 5 days |
Five days after the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, rescuers are still searching for survivors. Many people are still believed to be alive in the rubble.
Rescuers from China, Russia, India and other countries are trying to locate the missing. The government says more than 2,700 bodies have been recovered so far. The death toll is expected to reach 3,000 soon. More than a thousand people were injured. 441 people are still missing.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the quake could kill up to 10,000 people in Myanmar. Twenty-one people died in the disaster in Thailand.
An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Myanmar at 12: 20 pm local time on Friday (March 28). Its epicentre was 16 km northwest of Sagaing. The area is about 100 km north of the capital Naypyidaw. The quake was also felt in neighbouring Bangladesh, China, Thailand and Vietnam.
Many buildings, roads and bridges have been damaged. Power and internet services were also disrupted in many areas. The military government has officially appealed for international assistance for Myanmar.
