Plane crashes after take-off in the UK |
A Beechcraft B200 has crashed shortly after take-off at Southend Airport in Essex, south-west England. The incident took place at around 4 pm on Sunday (July 13).
Essex Police said in a statement:We are aware that a 12m long aircraft has crashed at Southend Airport at approximately 4pm.Our police and emergency services personnel are currently at the scene and carrying out their respective duties. They will be there for several hours. '
"I urge the general public to avoid the airport area as long as our operations continue."
The Beechcraft B200 is a small aircraft. The aircraft can carry two pilots and a maximum of nine passengers. Police did not say how many passengers were on the plane at the time of the crash. The number of casualties was also not known.
According to airport sources, the plane took off from Southend Airport for the Netherlands at around 4pm on Sunday, but crashed shortly after takeoff. The plane immediately caught fire after the crash. There was thick black smoke all around.
Essex County Fire Service sent crews to the airport to extinguish the fire. The East of England Ambulance Service, based in Essex, said it had sent four ambulances to the scene, including an air ambulance.
It is not yet known what caused the accident. The airport has been closed for an indefinite period following the incident. In a statement, Southend Airport said the airport would remain closed until further notice.
